Atonement by Ian McEwan

Book: Atonement
Author: Ian McEwan
Rating: 4 out of 5

I was really surprised that I enjoyed this book. After watching the movie, which was brilliant, I came to a decision that I could not read the book because of how I was so frustrated the the character Briony. I was forced to read this book for my post-modern contemporary British Literature and I ended up not hating it.

First, I would like to congratulate McEwan to creating a character that is just so despicable that to this day I have not found an equal match. Briony was indeed one of the most frustrating character I had ever read. There were moments where I just want to jump into the book and shake her. However, the love story between Cecilia and Robert was quite touching. It makes it even more heartbreaking.

There were some unnecessary scenes that kind of drags on quite a bit. I find them to be quite tedious and I found my self skimming through all the explicit war scene. I understand that some part was necessary for the detail of the book, however he could've condensed it down quite a bit.

Overall this book was worth the read. I highly recommend it. It's quite different from Mr. McEwan's other books, which is probably why I like this book the best.
